Garden Planning Calculator
How to Use the Garden Planning Calculator
Follow these steps to create a custom garden plan tailored to your location, garden size, and crops.
Step 1: Enter Your Location
Why: The calculator uses your location to estimate your local frost dates, which are essential for determining optimal planting times.
How: Simply enter your zip code or city name in the designated field. The calculator will generate an estimated last spring frost and first fall frost date for your region.
Tip: For the most accurate frost dates, you can cross-reference the dates provided by the calculator with those from your local agricultural extension or weather service.
Step 2: Enter Your Garden Size
Why: Knowing your garden size helps determine whether you have enough space for the crops you want to grow.
How: Input the total area of your garden in square feet. If you're unsure of the exact size, try to estimate based on the length and width of your garden plot.
Step 3: Select Your Crops
Why: By selecting the crops you want to plant, the calculator will provide specific planting and harvesting dates, space requirements, and companion planting suggestions.
How: Scroll through the list of crops and choose the ones you wish to grow. Hold down the Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) key to select multiple crops at once.
Crops Available:
Tomatoes
Carrots
Lettuce
Peppers
Beans
Cucumbers
Broccoli
Spinach
Squash
Corn
Note: As the tool evolves, more crops may be added, so check back regularly for updates.
Step 4: Click "Calculate Garden Plan"
What Happens: After clicking the button, the calculator will:
Display your estimated last spring and first fall frost dates.
Generate specific planting and harvesting dates for each of your selected crops.
Provide space requirements for each plant.
Offer companion planting suggestions and guidance on which plants should not be grown near each other.
Calculate the total amount of space required for all your crops.
Step 5: Review Your Garden Plan
Frost Dates:
The calculator will display your estimated last spring frost date (when you should start planting) and first fall frost date (when plants may be damaged by frost).
Planting and Harvesting Dates:
For each crop, you'll receive the ideal planting date (based on your local frost dates) and the estimated harvest date, which tells you when your crops will be ready to pick.
Space Requirements:
Each crop will have a recommended amount of space per plant, helping you plan how many plants you can fit in your garden.
Companion Planting:
The calculator provides a list of companion plants, which are crops that grow well together and can benefit each other.
It also advises on crops that should be avoided near each other, as certain plants can compete for nutrients or attract pests that can harm other plants.
Total Garden Space Needed:
If the total space required for your selected crops exceeds your garden size, the calculator will recommend adjusting your crop selection, reducing the number of plants, or using intensive gardening techniques like succession planting or vertical gardening.

Succession Planting: If your garden space is limited, consider using succession planting techniques—planting a second crop after the first has been harvested to maximize yield.
Companion Planting: Growing certain plants together can improve yields, reduce pests, and promote healthier growth.
Soil and Sunlight Requirements: Be mindful of your crops' sunlight and soil needs. Group plants with similar requirements for the best results.
Pest Control: Use natural pest management strategies like companion planting or introducing beneficial insects to keep your garden healthy.
